Why Early Literacy Matters
Learning to read by the end of third grade is one of the strongest predictors of future academic success. Before third grade, children are learning to read. After third grade, they begin reading to learn.
When children fall behind early, it becomes increasingly difficult to catch up. That's why United Way North Central Florida focuses our Youth Opportunity work on giving children the support they need during these critical years.

ReadingPals is United Way North Central Florida's signature early literacy program, connecting caring volunteer mentors with students from Pre-K through third grade who need extra support.
ReadingPals helps children:
Build foundational reading skills
Develop confidence in themselves and their abilities
Create meaningful relationships with caring adult mentors
Discover the joy of reading
Every hour a volunteer spends with a child helps strengthen literacy skills while building encouragement and confidence that lasts well beyond the classroom. ReadingPals is a statewide initiative led by The Children's Movement of Florida and locally administered by United Way North Central Florida.
United Way North Central Florida serves as the backbone organization for the Alachua County Campaign for Grade Level Reading, bringing together educators, nonprofits, businesses, government agencies, and community leaders around one shared goal: ensuring more children read proficiently by the end of third grade.
The campaign focuses on proven strategies that improve:
School readiness
Attendance
Out-of-school learning
Parent and family engagement
Together, we're aligning community efforts to create lasting improvements in literacy outcomes for children across Alachua County.
