United Way North Central Florida Awards $40,000 to ACORN Clinic to Help Bridge the Dental Divide for Adults in North Central Florida
Alachua County Organization for Rural Needs (ACORN) Clinic was recently awarded a $40,000 ‘Healthy Community Grant” through United Way North Central Florida (UWNCFL). ACORN was established to provide high-quality, comprehensive, and affordable oral healthcare for individuals and families facing financial insecurity in rural North Central Florida, including ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households.
Established in 1974, ACORN Clinic has provided affordable healthcare services for tens of thousands of patients in the North Central Florida region. Dental professionals and graduate students volunteer at ACORN to provide sliding-scale oral healthcare services to patients without insurance or financial resources to privately pay for their medical needs. ACORN ensures that financial barriers do not prevent individuals and families from accessing essential oral healthcare services.
Grant funding will support the repair and replacement of critical dental technology and equipment, helping ACORN modernize clinic operations, improve patient safety and strengthen its ability to provide efficient, high-quality care. These investments will directly benefit low-income and underserved residents who depend on ACORN for essential oral healthcare.

Dental care is the most commonly deferred form of healthcare in the United States, and 30% of adults below the ALICE threshold report going without needed dental care due to financial concerns. In 2024, emergency rooms in Alachua, Bradford, Dixie, Gilchrist, Levy, and Union counties recorded 3,868 visits for dental conditions.
Emergency departments can provide temporary relief through antibiotics or pain medication, but they generally cannot provide the definitive dental treatment needed to address the underlying problem. For local ALICE households, the cost of follow-up care can be prohibitive. ACORN helps break this cycle by providing timely preventative and restorative dental services to patients who might otherwise go without care.
Access to dental care also has implications beyond physical health. Untreated dental problems can contribute to missed work, difficulty maintaining employment and reduced confidence in professional and social settings. By helping patients address oral health needs, ACORN supports both healthier individuals and greater financial stability for local families. The need for ACORN’s dental services in North Central Florida is urgent given the shortage of affordable dental care in the region, and the increase in demand by local community members facing overwhelming financial barriers.
UWNCFL’s investment in ACORN reflects its commitment to creating a healthier community by removing barriers to essential care. Guided by ALICE data, UWNCFL directs community investments toward nonprofit programs that address critical needs and create pathways toward greater stability for households that are struggling to make ends meet.
Healthy Community is one of four strategic impact areas for UWNCFL, alongside Financial Security, Youth Opportunity and Community Resiliency. Through partnerships with local nonprofits, UWNCFL works to address the underlying challenges that prevent individuals and families from thriving.
