Meet ALICE:
ALICE, an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, comprises households with earnings above the Federal Poverty Level but less than what's needed to survive in the modern economy (the ALICE Threshold). ALICE families have been overlooked and undercounted by traditional poverty measures.
We all know people who are ALICE.
ALICE cares for and educates our children, keeps us healthy, and makes our quality of life possible, yet they do not earn enough to support their own families. ALICE households are forced to make tough choices, such as deciding between quality child care or paying the rent, and they have little or no savings which places them one emergency away from poverty.
The COVID-19 pandemic, a global health and economic crisis, upended life as we knew it. It claimed the lives of millions and unleashed a storm of competing economic forces - a phenomenon rarely seen. These included job disruption, inflation, wage increases, pandemic assistance, and migration.
The effects of the pandemic are still being felt.
ALICE in the Crosscurrents: An Update on the Financial Hardship in Florida shows that 13% of the state earned below the Federal Poverty Level and 33% were ALICE. Together, 46% of households in Florida were below the ALICE Threshold in 2022.
